Start with the behavior. The technology only matters when it changes what people expect, how they make decisions, and where they place their trust.
For brands, the opportunity is broader than a new chatbot or a new channel. It is to connect discovery, evaluation, purchase, and the relationship that follows.
Growth in AI-sourced visits to US retail sites.
Adobe reports this year-over-year change for April through June 2026. This is referral growth, not AI’s share of all traffic or proof of incremental sales.

The next storefront is a conversation.
OpenAI’s March 2026 shopping update brought visual browsing and side-by-side comparisons into ChatGPT. Product discovery can begin before a shopper visits a brand’s own site.
OpenAI · March 24, 2026 ↗Your product catalog, content, and reputation need to work together. Improve the information available to AI systems, then connect discovery to an experience that helps the customer decide. Measure referrals and outcomes separately.
Travel & hospitality
Be part of the plan. Not just the booking.
Adobe recorded 194% year-over-year growth in AI referrals to US travel sites in May 2026. Those visits still converted 28% less often than non-AI visits. Growing attention does not automatically mean better commercial performance.
Adobe · June 17, 2026 ↗Help travelers evaluate the trip, not just the room. Connect destination expertise, useful planning tools, clear availability, and an effective handoff into booking. Then test what improves completion.
Consumer brands
A new generation of expectations.
Matt’s Generation AI thesis follows a familiar pattern: younger consumers form new habits around technology, and those habits influence broader expectations. AI is another chapter, not a reason to abandon what is fundamentally human.
Use consumer understanding to choose where AI adds value. A useful brand agent, clear product guidance, or a relevant lifecycle message can serve a real need. A feature with no customer purpose cannot. Gen Alpha is a strategic lens, not an instruction to target children with advertising.
A new media environment
Paid presence. Organic credibility.
Different jobs.
ChatGPT advertising is in beta, with availability and advertiser eligibility constraints. OpenAI separates paid placements from its answers. Buying an ad does not buy an organic recommendation.
OpenAI advertising guidance ↗ How ads and answers are separated ↗Plan media and AEO together, but measure them separately. Use creative and buying to earn attention. Use content, technical accessibility, and credible information to improve discoverability.
